Artist Feature: Mike Villegas

I am really pumped to be featuring one of my all time FAV instagram artists, @mikevillustrationA.K.A. Mike Villegas. His work is instantly recognisable, succinct, tongue in cheek, thought provoking and graphic. He uses visual metaphors and plays with imagery and silhouettes so expertly that you find yourself doing a double take.  A while ago he did an entire 100 day series entitled “Where’s Your Head At?” which is definitely worth scrolling through on insta. It’s basically Insanely Awesome.

I sent him a few questions, heres what he said:

1. Tell us a bit about you.

I’m a 43 year old going on 12. Born and raised in Wisconsin. I’ve been drawing since I can remember. I am married to the greatest woman in history and have 3 beautiful, rambunctious kids, whom we call “children of the corn”.

2. How did you get into design?

I got into the arts when my parents handed me my first drawing utensil; and for that I am forever grateful.

3. Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from what makes me laugh, makes me think and makes me question. I’m the past I would incessantly look at other artist’s work and see it come out in my own. I still look at other artwork for inspiration, but try not to “borrow” too much. Some of my favorite artists: Giacometti; James Victore; Ben Shahn; Christoph Niemann. One more thing that inspires me: music. Especially that of Jeff Tweedy, his solo work and that of his bands

4. Why do you art?

I art because I am blessed to do so 📷

5. Where do you see your design wagon rolling to in the future?

Hopefully more freelance opportunities, maybe books, collaborations and just having my voice heard. I’d love to do work for the New York Times and any other publication they have. Another would be to have a piece in Wired Magazine.

So if you don’t already follow Mike on insta, what the hell?!? Do it Immediately.
